Celebrating your Vagina!
Can you believe we have a day now to recognize and celebrate our vagina? It’s about time! I think about the feelings I have about my own vagina: When did I start having shame about it? I didn’t have shame about my belly button, my collarbone, my toes- why my vagina? Well, to begin with, I called it something else… My mom and my grandmother called it “puney.” Even now, writing the word brings me a great level of discomfort. So, yes, its about time the vagina is de-mystified, de-shrouded, and celebrated!
Vaginas are amazing. They have the ability to create life! Ancient civilizations worshipped women and their vaginas for their life-giving power. Somewhere along the way, we forgot how to celebrate our vaginas. We’ve lost some of the mystical elements of sisterhood and the feminine mystique. For our grandmothers, talking about their vaginas was taboo. Our mothers started to rediscover the power of discussing sex and their bodies. Now, it’s up to us to take the conversation to the next level!
First off, let’s be able to say the word VAGINA with a neutral feeling. Let’s teach our children the proper word instead of a cutesy euphemism. We can impress on our children that the vagina is a sacred part of the body that should be respected, cared for, and protected.
We take care of our bodies by going to the gym, eating right, and visiting the doctor. You have a skincare routine that you follow. When that’s not enough, you go to the dermatologist to treat stubborn acne or reduce wrinkles. Why should we treat our vaginas any differently? The skin between your legs deserves as much tender care as the skin on your face. Arguably, it could even have a higher priority. After all, our vaginas are the entryway to love and pleasure and the starting point for human life.
Yet, this sacred area can cause unease and pain for many women. In fact, up to 75% of women will experience vaginal discomfort at some point in their lives.
They didn’t teach us about that in sex ed, but it’s true! After childbirth, the vaginal and pelvic tissues experience scars and stretching. Breastfeeding increases the hormone prolactin, which helps with milk flow but also creates vaginal dryness and lowers libido. A wide variety of common medications, including birth control, anti-depressants, cold and allergy treatments, and blood pressure regulators, can have the same effects! During perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause, our estrogen production decreases. When our estrogen levels decrease, so do our levels of collagen and elastin. That means you might experience vaginal dryness, decreased sensitivity, and less arousal. Chemotherapy makes the vaginal walls thin, dry, and fragile and can cause tearing, bleeding, and painful sex. Even a little extra stress is enough to throw off your vagina’s rhythm!
All of this can take a beautiful act of pleasure and intimacy and make it a chore. You may feel disconnected from your partner and from your feminine essence. Don’t suffer in silence! If you experience vaginal issues, you’re not alone. There’s no reason to feel shame. Your sisterhood is here for you. There is a solution! Your vagina deserves better!
